The effects of lymph node extirpation on long-term prognosis of non-metastatic canine oral malignant melanoma.

Aims and objectives of the study:

1. To compare the disease progression rates, survival times of two treatment groups of nonmetastatic canine oral malignant melanoma (Stage I and Stage II with N0)— (1) primary tumor/local surgical excision (group 1) versus (2) primary tumor removal with non-selective cervical LNs extirpation (group 2).

2. To determine complications related to non-selective lymph node extirpation of the cervical

   lymph nodes (> or = of 3 LNs).

3. To evaluate the disease progression rate and survival times of a subgroup of dogs with OMM Stage I or II (with N0) that undergo a non-metastatic sentinel LN removal only.

We hypothesized that there would be a significant advantage of disease progression rates and survival times in the group where non-selective elective lymphadenectomy is performed.

The effects of adjuvant vs. sole therapy with Palladia (tocernib phosphate) in canine gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST’s) on long term survival.

Lead investigator: Judith Bertran

The main purpose of the proposed study is to compare the treatment of GIST’s with surgery alone versus in a microscopic setting treated with a full course of Palladia versus in a gross tumor setting with Palladia to determine if there is a clinical benefit to treating GISTs with Palladia

Aims:

1.To compare the disease progression rates and survival times of 3 treatment groups of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GISTs)— (1) surgery alone versus (2) surgery followed by Palladia (toceranib phosphate) versus (3) Palladia alone in a gross tumor setting. 

2. To determine prognostic indicators associated with GISTs — previously described indicators of prognosis have not been consistent. These included mitotic index, tumor size, histopathologic subtype, and metastasis however these have not been consistent findings across all studies.

3. To determine GIST associated clinical signs, signalment, and most common locations of tumor.

Outcomes and prognostic factors associated with surgical management of primary intramuscular hemangiosarcoma in dogs: A Veterinary Society of Surgical Oncology retrospective case series.

Objectives of the study:

1)    Describe the clinical outcome (progression free interval [PFI], recurrence rate and metastatic rate, and survival time [ST]) of dogs that underwent surgical excision (with or without adjuvant therapy) of primary intramuscular hemangiosarcoma (IMHSA).

2)    Investigate factors associated with tumor recurrence and development of metastasis.

3)    Investigate prognostic factors for progression free interval (PFI) and survival time (ST).
